Yates Like the soundtrack to a dark science fiction land, much of the sound is foreboding, as heavy and intense as it is ambient. A strong and well craft album. Favorite track: You Are Now One of Us.

Jeff McLeod Masterfully-executed, creeped-out dark soundscaping. Dreamy and sinister tracks with great variety. Favorite track: You Are Now One of Us.

about

From The Subversive Workshop (6-20-22): Reverse Engineer has been an improvisational/experimental force here in the South for nearly twenty years, and Red Hills finds them at the peak of their powers. It’s filled with beautiful, dark soundscapes that enter the ears and ignite the mind. Red Hills features RE’s masterful mainstay Kenny Johnson alongside excellent multi-instrumentalist Stephen McClurg, and I’ve gotta say that I can’t stop listening. Intense, brooding sound sculpture with moments of lovely light and melody. Highly-recommended if you are looking for a dark soundtrack to get lost in. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Reverse Engineer began in 2003 with three members of the Alabama Improv Cooperative based in Montgomery. After nearly 10 years of performing at rock clubs, bookstores, art museums, coffee shops and house shows, RE became a solo recording project for Kenny Johnson. During that time, RE has made more than 20 recordings. A few influences on RE’s sound include Sun Ra, Harry Partch, John Carpenter, Mark Mothersbaugh, Frank Zappa’s orchestral music, and Blade Runner.

2022's Red Hills features multi-instrumentalist Stephen McClurg. Learn more about McClurg’s music and writing at www.stephenmcclurg.com.

The album was created with shared synth tracks and fleshed out with film score textures and ambiance.

From Stephen: "When I initially received Kenny’s synth tracks, it brought me back to the first experiences of playing improvised music, of staring at a guy with an SK-1 and a contact mic on a coffee grinder and me realizing that the 'Spanish Castle Magic' riff wasn’t going to work. It took a while to get started, but being a child of the ‘80s, his synth tracks led me to movie images, and to focus on ambience and film score textures. I appreciated the freedom and encouragement to try ideas that I hadn’t before, while tapping into some of the foundations of my musical imagination."

Red Hills listens as if it's a horror film soundtrack. Listeners are encouraged to follow along with the song titles and think the worst.
